Lathe Tool
Making a variable speed lathe?

I have a vice where the speed is adjusted by moving the belts in different size pulleys. As this requires stopping the wheel and open the access panel, I'd be able to change the speed on the fly. I've seen pictures of variable speed control that can be connect to an online tool, then speed up and down. They say they are not for use with slow starters. How I can know if the engine I have is to start slow? Does anyone have any other suggestions?

Because your drive motor is not art, but the tape drive, I think it was manufactured at its high level of force to support the various alterations through the belts. I have to assume that is an old model. I'm no electrician, but I used many lathes, often. I suspect that a "rheostat" only put more pressure on an engine not designed in this technology. We'll also assume that most or all lathes are not immediately over 25,000 RPM, such as routers or are not strictly enforced. To re-create a slow starter, is best left to more qualified, or to understand the design and engine dynamics. Steven Wolf (The Rev.)
