Can a twist throttle is used to control DC motor speed?
I need to regulate the speed of a DC motor without PWM. Is possible to find a rotary rheostat dimmer switch that can handle 500w? I'm not worried about the loss of heat. Power supply DC 18V, 15A motor amplifier, thank you!
No. A wall mount type light dimmer house would not serve its purpose very reliable. These most often used Triac so receive only a AC wave chopped them. Even if you put a diode in series with regulator of this type, the initial surge current draft of the DC motor would put a big load on the regulator and possibly damage any coils inside. Moreover, they would have to install a diode in series, lost the downregulation and the motor will "coast" at a lower speed rather than being regulated to a lower speed. And if the engine generates an increase of a few kV, the regulator and diode die. To adjust the shaft speed of a DC motor that has to reduce effectively the DC input voltage (this should not be confused with an AC motor that requires a constant AC voltage). Or to use a variable power supply, ballast resistor or some form of variable pulse duration / width control. Followed by a variable autotransformer rectifier bridge can be a better solution, but since Variacs would have to vary the AC input to the power supply, not the output. Would your stable power supply in reduced operating voltages then?
